The streamlined, 1900-pound trailers manufactured by boat-builder Ed Wills and distributed by Keith Black Racing Engines were the hot setup when slingshot dragsters were routinely pulled by a stock El Camino, station wagon or half-ton pickup. Engine-builder Mike Kuhl’s last project before succumbing to Alzheimer’s (2020) was restoring a dilapidated, dual-axle model into this period-perfect hauler for the Top Fueler that he campaigned from 1969 to 1971; reacquired more than three decades later; then rebuilt for original-driver Carl Olsen to push-start in contemporary cacklefests. Mr. Ed’s 3/16-inch-thick fiberglass came in various colors, “impregnated” with metalflake. Dealer financing enabled cash-strapped racers to tow one away for just $200 down. We wonder how many of those guys followed up with all — if any! — of the $48 monthly payments.
