Tokyo is about to become a playground for electric cars. On March 14 and 15, automotive media company Geibunsha will host “EV: LIFE FUTAKO TAMAGAWA 2026,” an electric-mobility experience event in the Futako-Tamagawa Rise complex. The gathering has quietly grown into one of Japan’s more interesting EV showcases, giving car fans and curious drivers a rare chance to get up close with the latest electric vehicles before they officially hit local showrooms.
This year’s highlight is the domestic debut of the all-new Insight, now reborn as a fully electric vehicle. For longtime car enthusiasts, that name carries a lot of history. Once known as Honda’s early hybrid experiment, the Insight is now returning in an entirely new form, reflecting how aggressively the industry has pivoted toward battery-powered mobility.
Visitors will also see roughly 20 electrified models from both Japanese and international brands. Some of them, including the BYD Racco and Subaru Trail Seeker, will appear in Japan for the first time ahead of their official market launches. The event will allow attendees to inspect interiors, explore cabin space, and get a close look at design and technology that most drivers normally only see in press photos.
One of the biggest draws will be the test-drive program. Participants can drive the newest BEVs and plug-in hybrids on public roads around the venue with instructors riding along. For many visitors, it’s the first opportunity to experience how today’s electric cars actually behave in real traffic rather than on a closed demonstration loop.
Inside the venue, organizers will also showcase V2L technology, where vehicles power external devices directly from their batteries. That includes live demonstrations such as electronic instruments running off an EV’s battery pack. The event will also host the EV Awards 2026 ceremony, evaluating 23 electrified models launched or announced in Japan during 2025. Winners will be chosen through reader votes and a jury of automotive journalists, highlighting which EVs are capturing both public attention and industry respect.
