During its 2025 Technology Day in China, Toyota showcased its intention to deepen its integration of AI and electrification, leveraging partnerships with local tech leaders alongside announcing product updates.
A highlight of the event was the confirmation that next‑generation Highlander and Sienna models will adopt long‑range electric powertrains. Additionally, Toyota and its joint venture partner, GAC, have revealed plans for two new energy vehicle platforms and confirmed collaborations with major tech companies, including Huawei and Xiaomi.
These new platforms are designed explicitly for energy-efficient vehicles and are compatible with all-electric, range-extended, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. One platform is optimized for compact and midsize cars under 5,000 mm (196.9 inches) in length, while the other is intended for larger vehicles, accommodating sizes up to 5,300 mm (208.7 inches).
The bZ7 is the latest model in Toyota's bZ electric vehicle (EV) series and is already available for sale in China. Like its predecessors, the bZ7 is a product of collaboration with GAC and uses the latest electric vehicle (EV) technology. It showcases Toyota's striking hammerhead design and sleek lighting features, all in a coupe-like crossover sedan shape.
The interior is designed with a refined and upscale atmosphere, combining premium materials and thoughtful layout to create a sophisticated driving environment. With a length exceeding 5,000 mm (196.9 inches), the bZ7 offers a spacious interior that consumers desire.
Industry insiders suggest that the bZ7 will be equipped with various sensors and driver-assist features to strike a perfect balance between driving pleasure, comfort, and efficiency. Toyota's latest design language is evident in the vehicle's refined lines and surfaces, with thin, sharp headlamps standing out as a notable feature.
The bZ7 will be the first model to utilize Toyota's larger of the two new platforms, positioning it as the flagship EV in China. Depending on pricing strategies, it is expected to compete with the Tesla Model S in terms of market presence. Initially unveiled in April 2025, the bZ7 is set for a full market launch in China in the first quarter of 2026.
Analysts view the bZ7 as a significant milestone in Toyota's technology strategy. It will introduce Huawei's DriveOne powertrain, which integrates the motor, MCU, and inverter into a single unit. The bZ7 will feature Huawei's updated HarmonyOS cockpit system, enhancing connectivity. Additionally, LiDAR sensors point to advanced autonomous driving capabilities.
Beyond the new platform, GAC Toyota is developing an electronic architecture to support next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and intelligent cockpit systems. Artificial intelligence is expected to play an increasingly vital role in these advancements. Reports from Chinese media outlet Sohu indicate that GAC envisions the vehicle's voice assistant evolving into a caretaker by 2026-2027. By 2028, it will potentially grow into an intuitive, symbiotic partner capable of understanding human emotions.
