Volvo Car USA has issued a safety recall for 11,469 vehicles after discovering that certain brake-energy-recuperation modes can trigger a total loss of braking. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists the defect under campaign number 25V392000 and warns that the problem significantly increases crash risk.
Affected models span battery-electric and plug-in hybrid lines: 2023 C40 BEV and 2023-2024 XC40 BEV; the new-for-2025 EC40 and 2025-2026 EX40; 2020-2026 XC90 PHEV; 2022-2026 XC60 PHEV; 2023-2025 S60 PHEV; 2024-2025 V60 PHEV; and the 2025 S90 PHEV. Volvo's investigation found that when drivers coast downhill using "B" mode (for hybrids) or "One Pedal Drive" (for EVs), hydraulic brakes may cease to function altogether.
Until repairs are completed, owners are advised to avoid those drive modes. Volvo will push an over-the-air software update to recalibrate the brake-control module; dealers will provide the same fix free of charge for vehicles that do not receive the update automatically. Owner notification letters are scheduled to mail on Aug. 6, 2025.
Drivers with questions can contact Volvo customer service at 800-458-1552, referencing internal recall code R10329. As with all federal recalls, repairs are mandatory and cost-free; owners can also check their vehicle identification number on NHTSA's recall website for status updates.
